Biography

Stanley L. Cunningham’s practice centers on oil and gas litigation, transactions, and related regulatory matters.  During the course of his extensive career, he has represented oil and gas producers in drilling and exploratory transactions, producing properties acquisitions, and state and federal regulatory matters.

In addition to having extensive experience in large-scale natural gas litigation, he also represents clients engaged in international and domestic business transactions. His experience in international transactions extends to Latin America, the Middle East, the Far East, Australia, and Europe.  Specific countries include the United Kingdom, Norway, The Netherlands, Spain, Spanish Sahara, Nigeria, Egypt, Namibia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Indonesia, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Argentina.

Stan has authored numerous articles on oil and gas law and has been a featured speaker on the subjects of “Class Action in Oil and Gas Litigation” and “Oil and Gas Contracts” at forums such as the Eugene Kuntz Conference on Natural Resources Law and Policy, the University of Oklahoma College of Law, and the Southwest Legal Foundation. 

Stan’s experience and expertise in the field of natural resources law has earned him inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America.  He has also been featured in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World

Prior to joining McAfee & Taft in 1971, Stan was engaged as an attorney in the legal department of Phillips Petroleum Company.

Representative Experience

  • Successfully represented natural gas producers in McCombs vs. Federal Power Commission, 542 F.2d 1144 (10th Cir. 1976), on rehearing, McCombs v. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, 570 F.2d 1376 (10th Cir. 1978), reversed United Gas Pipeline Co. v. McCombs, 442 U.S. 529 (1979), on remand, McCombs v. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, 705 F.2d 1177 (10th Cir. 1980), on joint motion to vacate and dismiss, McCombs v. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, 710 F.2d 611 (10th Cir. 1983).
  • Successfully represented producer clients in Forest Oil Corporation v. Oneok, Inc., No. C-84-179, in the District Court, Caddo County, Oklahoma; RJB Gas Pipeline Company v. Colorado Interstate Gas Company, 813 P.2d 1 and 813 P.2d 14 (Okla. App. 1989). 
  • Representation of defendants in major class action litigation.   See, Roberts Ranch Company, et al, v. Exxon Corporation, et al., 43 F. Supp. 2d 1252 (W.D. Okla 1997)
